A large brass lantern dating from around 1900, with a richly worked repoussé body and a tall, architectural silhouette. The domed upper section is crowned by an openwork coronet, while the frame is articulated with raised bosses, chased details, and scrolling foliate ornament. The polished relief catches the light particularly well, creating lively highlights against the warmer aged brass. The lantern retains its original small latch and opens easily. The glass panels are no longer present, although the original retaining tabs remain in place; replacing them would require specially cut curved glass.
Its generous scale gives it real presence, while the crown-shaped top and richly detailed brass work lend it a particularly distinctive character. The lantern could be wired for light, although its sculptural silhouette and richly worked surface are equally compelling when displayed simply as a decorative accent.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
