Large Rustic Antique French Cutting Board from Provence

An antique French cutting board from Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells’s Provençal home, acquired at the brocante (antique market) in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Hand carved from a single slab of hardwood, this planche à découper (cutting board) is generously scaled and satisfyingly heavy. Its rectangular surface and short, tapered handle with a small hanging hole are finished with a deep chestnut-brown patina. Countless knife marks, softened edges, and age checks along the rim attest to decades of real kitchen work. Worn yet sturdy, it has the honest texture cooks value and the quiet authority that suits Patricia’s kitchens. From the student's kitchen at Chanteduc, it reflects Patricia's cultivated, unfussy sensibility shaped by markets, gardens, artisans, and the daily rhythm of cooking in Paris and Provence. She explains, “You can hang it or rest it on the counter. It’s got so much wear, and you can make up stories about the people who used it, what they cooked, and how happy they were in the kitchen!” Style it upright as sculptural patina against a backsplash, hang it within reach near the stove, or bring it to the table for bread, cheese, and seasonal fruit.
