A large and charming French jam jar from Savoie, dating to the mid 20th century. It is made of yellow-glazed terracotta and decorated with hand-painted fruit motifs, with the word Confiture (jam) incised across the surface. The straight-sided cylindrical body rises to a gently thickened rim, edged in a dark chocolate band, while a soft straw-yellow ground is animated by hand-painted fruit and green leaves in a loose, expressive hand. The surface shows natural speckling and small chips to the rim, adding to its authentic appeal.
Savoyard pottery favored practical forms and warm, earthy tones suited to Alpine homes. Such jars once held homemade preserves before the widespread use of glass. This example reflects a rustic decorative tradition, combining simple forms with hand-painted motifs inspired by orchard harvests, in direct relation to its original use. Charming in a kitchen, it works well as a utensil holder, and makes a quirky vase for fresh blooms or a cachepot for herbs, bringing warmth and character to everyday spaces.
