Large Southern French Terracotta Orjol with Yellow and Green Glaze Splashes, Late 19th Century - 15¾"

A beautiful large antique orjol, probably dating from the late 19th century, with the wonderfully sculptural form that makes these southern French water vessels so distinctive. Its generously rounded, almost spherical body is particularly appealing, made more expressive by the relatively small proportions of the twisted handle and narrow pouring spout. Much of the terracotta has been left exposed, contrasting with freely applied honey-yellow glaze and touches of deep green that flow around the shoulder, handle, and spout. There are several small chips around the base and losses to the glaze at the rim, consistent with age and long use, but the interior glaze is well preserved, allowing the vessel to hold water for fresh flowers. 

The orjol was a traditional earthenware water jug of southern France, particularly associated with the area between Béziers and Montpellier and toward the Cévennes, used to carry water from the fountain into the home. This example is especially appealing for the generosity of its rounded form and the spontaneity of its glazing: the warm yellow and unexpected green runs animate the earthy terracotta and make the vessel highly individual. Filled with flowers or leafy branches, or simply left empty, it has the warmth and authenticity of an old utilitarian object combined with a remarkably strong sculptural presence.
