A still life in pastel, depicting a stoneware jug with blue decoration arranged alongside aubergines, a cut squash, fresh greens, and a draped cloth in deep blue. The work is signed and dated 1923 in the lower left. The early 20th century saw a revival of pastel still life, prized for its saturated color and soft, velvety surface, and this composition reflects that moment with a quiet, domestic sensibility. The artwork itself is in very good condition, with colors that remain fresh and well preserved beneath glass. The ornate gilt frame is richly decorative but shows wear, with extensive gesso cracking and losses consistent with age. While timeworn, it lends historical character to the piece and may also be easily replaced to suit personal taste or a more contemporary setting.
Well suited to a dining room, breakfast nook, or kitchen, it sits beautifully above a sideboard, near open shelving, or layered with pottery and copper. The composition brings a gentle market-day atmosphere and a sense of simple refinement to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
