This large oil on canvas, signed Vivès Apy, presents an animated scene of the Provençal countryside at harvest time. In the foreground, a cart laden with hay and drawn by oxen brings life and movement to the composition, set against gently rolling hills, cypress trees, and warm, sunlit earth. The palette of soft ochres, terracotta tones, and muted greens evokes the dry heat and golden light of the Mediterranean landscape. The composition captures a moment of rural life with simplicity and charm, the figures integrated naturally into their surroundings. The handling is fluid and atmospheric, with lightly structured forms and a delicate treatment of light that softens the scene and enhances its sense of place.
Charles Joseph Vivès Apy (1874–1937), born in Arles and active in Provence, is known for his evocative views of villages and countryside around Marseille. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1906 and developed a body of work centered on the rhythms and landscapes of southern France. His paintings are appreciated for their warm tonality and their ability to convey the quiet poetry of everyday rural life.
Presented in an elegant moulded gilt wood frame with warm patina, the work has a strong decorative presence while remaining gently narrative. It would sit beautifully in a living room or dining space, bringing a timeless Provençal atmosphere and a sense of sunlit rural tradition into the interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
