A handsome three-tier dumbwaiter in richly patinated mahogany, dating from the late 19th century and likely English. The graduated circular tiers are supported by a finely turned central standard with carved and ring-turned details, all raised on elegant cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. The warm mahogany has developed a beautiful depth of colour over time, highlighting the quality of the timber and craftsmanship.
Popular in British homes throughout the 19th century, three-tier dumbwaiters were used to display and serve fruit, cakes, tea wares, and other refreshments. Their compact footprint and vertical design provided an elegant solution for entertaining while adding decorative interest to a room. The piece remains in very good condition, with attractive wear consistent with age and use. The lower tier has been professionally restored, while light scuffs and surface marks contribute to its authentic character.
With its tiered form and beautifully aged mahogany, this piece creates an eye-catching display wherever it is placed. Originally intended for the presentation of fruit, cakes, and refreshments in the dining room, it can be reimagined today as a display for books, ceramics, collected objects, or even accessories and jewelry in a dressing room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
