Large Vintage Four-Light Wrought-Iron Lantern w/ Scrollwork - 35½"

This large vintage wrought-iron lantern has a tall glazed hexagonal body framed by an elaborate arrangement of scrolling ironwork. Four candle-style lights rise within the clear glass enclosure, while broad curved straps and repeated open scrolls extend above, below and around the central frame, giving the lantern a richly worked silhouette. Despite the amount of ornament, the dark blackened finish tempers the decoration and keeps the overall effect airy. 

The lantern has been carefully restored and rewired in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence by a passionate specialist in historic lighting working closely with Mathieu Lustrerie, the renowned Provençal atelier specializing in the restoration and creation of fine historic lighting. Although well suited to a covered outdoor setting, the electrification is not intended for direct exposure to the elements, so the lantern should be used beneath a roof or other protected structure.

 Despite its generous scale and elaborate silhouette, the open scrollwork gives the lantern a light, refined appearance. The dark iron grounds the decoration and gives the piece a strong architectural presence, while the four dimmable lights allow the atmosphere to shift from soft and intimate to brighter and more practical. It would sit especially well in a large entrance hall or beneath a covered porch, where its scale and graphic ironwork can give structure and presence to the space.
