A large vintage French salad bowl from Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells’s Provençal home, this creamy faience saladier (a grand cream-glazed earthenware bowl) is adorned with delicate vertical fluting and a softly scalloped rim. Its gentle ivory tone carries a mellow, old-world sheen; the light utensil traces are the kind one hopes to find on a well-loved piece. Broad and comfortably deep, it has a timeless silhouette that settles as naturally on a country table as in a clean, contemporary setting. From Patricia’s personal collection, it reflects her life between Paris and Provence.
Patricia’s sensibility is here in full: intelligent simplicity, usefulness, and hospitality. She explains that she favors pieces that let good ingredients shine, and this calm off-white surface makes market greens, citrus, and summer tomatoes look vivid. Set it at the center of the table heaped with leafy salad and a mustardy vinaigrette, or rest it on a kitchen shelf filled with lemons when not in service. It also works beautifully as a fruit bowl on a console, where the subtle ribbing and scalloped edge add quiet texture without calling attention to themselves.
