This large vintage Tuscan orcio, traditionally used for storing olive oil, is hand-thrown in terracotta with a full, rounded body articulated by broad horizontal ribs and a thick rolled rim. The interior is glazed, while the exterior has been left natural in keeping with traditional construction, with a warm, softly weathered surface showing variations in the clay and traces of age. A few small chips and losses add to its rustic character. Dating from the mid-20th century, it features a molded cartouche on the shoulder identifying it as a rare piece from the 'Premiata Fabbrica Ezio Benocci & Fratelli' in Petroio, near Siena - a region world-renowned for the exceptional quality and frost-resistance of its clay. The pronounced ribs give the jar a strong sculptural rhythm, while the mellow terracotta brings warmth and an organic, distinctly Mediterranean quality. Its handcrafted construction and softened wear are central to its appeal. It would make a strong accent in an entryway, kitchen or covered terrace, filled with tall branches or used as a cachepot for a large cactus or other architectural plant. Its generous proportions and warm clay tones bring height, texture and a relaxed Mediterranean character to a space. The jar is not pierced therefore we do not recommend using it as an outdoor planter.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
