This large, sculptural stoneware vase by French ceramicist Josephte Grange-Sarles, crafted in the 1970s or 1980s, embodies the earthy, tactile essence of her artistry. Made from the robust stoneware clay of Puisaye, the piece features opulent, rounded forms reminiscent of ancient vessels. With a red-brick color and subtle, indigo-tinged glaze accents near the rim, it carries textured and gilded vertical lines, giving it a striking, organic presence evocative of a pumpkin with diagonal ribs.

Grange-Sarles creates each piece with a blend of intensity and calm, allowing the natural textures of clay, mineral sprays, and the unpredictable ash and flame of the wood-fired kiln to impart a unique, raw beauty. Her work eschews superfluous decoration; instead, it relies on the interplay of her hands, the material, and the transformative power of fire. Each vase she produces emerges from the kiln with its own story, a testament to her philosophy of "living with" art, inviting users to experience a sense of distant tales and dreamlike landscapes.
