This petite round French Louis XVI stool dates to the late 18th century and is crafted in painted wood with a fresh natural linen seat. The circular apron is delicately carved with a running ribbon motif punctuated by square rosettes, set above four fluted legs terminating in toupie feet. The paint is a soft grey-green with a mellow, chalky patina, paired with linen edged in a narrow gimp. It has likely been repainted in its original tone, as the surface shows remarkably few chips or abrasions. Scattered pinholes testify to its age and authenticity.
Round tabourets of this type were prized in salons and boudoirs for their versatility, their light scale and painted finishes harmonizing with carved boiseries and the pale palettes favored in Parisian interiors of the Louis XVI period.
Today, this stool lends gentle structure and texture to a variety of settings. It suits a dressing table or vanity, tucks neatly beneath a console in an entry, or serves as a low perch beside a fireplace. In a bathroom or powder room, it becomes a refined accent beside a freestanding tub, stacked with folded towels, or positioned as an elegant seat at a marble-topped vanity. Its muted paint and natural linen pair effortlessly with Gustavian pieces, French country pine, or clean-lined modern upholstery, introducing a poised, quiet note to both classical and contemporary interiors.
