This tall and graceful French bonnetière from the late 18th century is crafted in solid hardwood, likely oak or chestnut, and later finished in a soft pale grey. The single door is framed by a stepped cornice and raised on bun feet, its three molded panels featuring a floral-embellished arch, a scalloped mid-panel, and a circular cartouche below. Inside, adjustable shelves provide flexible storage. The surface bears a mellow, timeworn patina with age-related fissures, scattered stains, minor edge wear, and small paint losses that enhance its antique character.
Originating in Brittany and Normandy, bonnetières were designed to store linens and the tall coifs from which they take their name. This example bridges late Louis XV curves with Louis XVI geometry, marrying rosettes and arches with clean cartouches. The later grey paint echoes Gustavian influence while lending the piece a timeless, understated elegance. With its slender footprint, this piece makes an elegant storage solution for hallways, bedrooms, or kitchens. Style it with wicker, ceramics, or white faïence for a provincial mood, or place it against modern furnishings for contrast.
