A rare and beautiful 18th-century Provençal boutis coverlet in toile de Nîmes, hand-quilted in cotton and decorated on both sides with contrasting printed designs. One face features a deep indigo ground with ecru reserve-printed urns, floral scrolling garlands. The reverse is printed with a delicate all-over floral pattern in soft celadon, madder red, and cream. Fine quilting throughout creates a lightly raised surface with small circular stitched motifs and a supple drape. Rooted in the textile traditions of southern France, this coverlet reflects the rich manufacturing culture that flourished around Nîmes and Marseille during the eighteenth century.
Toile de Nîmes refers to the durable textiles produced in and around the city of Nîmes, a major weaving centre from at least the sixteenth century. Originally woven from blends of wool and silk sourced from the nearby Cévennes, these sturdy fabrics became an important commercial product. Through extensive trade networks and the spread of French textile expertise across Europe, the reputation of Nîmes textiles grew internationally. The name denim derives from the French de Nîmes (from Nîmes), reflecting the city's long association with textile production. Although this coverlet is a printed and quilted cotton rather than a denim fabric, it belongs to the same textile heritage that made Nîmes one of France's most important historic centres of weaving and textile manufacture.
Whether placed at the foot of a bed, draped over a bench, or layered into a cosy reading nook, this antique boutis brings warmth, texture, and historic character to an interior. Its reversible construction offers two distinct decorative faces, while its Provençal heritage lends an unmistakable sense of French country elegance.
Timeworn condition consistent with age, with areas of wear, thinning, and fabric breakdown to the lighter side, with occasional exposure of the original cotton wadding. The indigo face remains remarkably well preserved. Both sides retain strong colour and considerable decorative appeal.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
