From the French Alps, this late 19th-century painted copper oil lamp charms with its sculptural pilgrim-flask silhouette and gently flared foot, still crowned with its original burner fitting. The rounded body is washed in a soft duck-egg blue and adorned by hand: on one side, stylized yellow and white blooms; on the other, a cheerful arrangement of fruit in a bowl. Rolled seams trace the curved edges, while a delicate constellation of age-earned speckling adds depth and texture.
The painted decoration is likely slightly later , dating to the early to mid-20th century, and it retains a delightful folk naïve charm. The colours are soft and pleasing, beautifully complementing the mellow blue ground. The proportions are nicely balanced and pleasingly tactile in hand. A timeworn patina and scattered oxidation enrich the surface and speak to its layered history. This piece was likely adapted as a lamp base at some point in its life, yet it is equally intriguing and decorative as it stands today. It reads as a poetic accent on a console, farmhouse dresser, or kitchen shelf, where its frosted blue and leafy greens soften stone, linen, and timber with ease.
Style it in a chalet entry, a Provençal kitchen, or a relaxed coastal interior, layered with pottery and woven baskets. It may remain purely sculptural, or be professionally wired once more as a distinctive table lamp, preserving its character while giving it renewed purpose.
