This beautifully worked late 19th-century French gravure habillée, or dressed engraving, features a fashion illustration from La Mode Illustrée, carefully embellished with real fabrics, lace and decorative trimmings to bring the costumes to life. Two elegantly dressed women appear engaged in conversation in a fashionable Parisian interior, their elaborate gowns creating a beautiful contrast of colors and textures. The woman on the left wears a voluminous black dress with a glimpse of brilliant emerald-green fabric beneath, delicate white lace cuffs and small red flowers in her hair. Opposite her, the second woman wears an elaborate cream gown decorated with wide mauve bands, rippling purple braid and fine lace. The individually arranged textiles give the dresses remarkable volume and detail, while the women's faces and the surrounding interior retain the delicacy of the original print.
The engraving is presented in a deep, molded giltwood frame, whose warm gilding and generous proportions give the scene a beautifully finished, almost portrait-like presence. The paper shows gentle discoloration and a small stain beneath the illustration, while the textile embellishments remain attractive and the frame has minor age-related wear. These dressed engravings required considerable patience and skill, transforming the fashion illustrations of La Mode Illustrée into miniature works of textile art. Here, the contrast between the dark, richly draped costume and the lighter gown with its rhythmic bands of purple trim makes the scene particularly appealing.
The two women seem absorbed in their exchange, giving the illustration a sense of everyday life beyond its original purpose of presenting the latest Parisian fashions. Somewhere between fashion illustration, needlework and decorative art, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the elegance and social customs of 19th-century Paris. The rich colors and gilded frame would make it particularly attractive in a bedroom, dressing room or as part of a gallery wall alongside antique portraits and other works on paper.
Note: Other dressed engravings from the same collection, each featuring a different scene, are also available for individual purchase here.
