Late 19th-Century French Fabric-Embellished Fashion Plate - 17¼" x 13½"

This late 19th-century French artwork began as a hand-colored fashion plate published in the weekly journal La Mode Illustrée, depicting two elegantly dressed women in a refined interior and presenting readers with the latest Parisian styles. The fashions shown are identified as “Toilettes de Mme Bréant-Castel,” referring to the Parisian couturière Bréant-Castel, whose work appeared in fashion publications during the second half of the 19th century. At a later stage, the printed image was carefully embellished by hand with real textiles, lace, ribbons and applied trims. The fabrics were cut to follow the printed silhouettes precisely, then built up over the image so that the dresses seem to project from the page, giving the fashions a real sense of volume, texture and physical presence. An especially appealing detail is the floral arrangement beside the standing figure, which has also been worked in relief, extending the three-dimensional treatment beyond the clothing itself.

Presented in a deep, glass-fronted display case with a delicately ornamented gilt frame, the piece shows gentle fading and light discoloration consistent with its fragile antique materials.
