Late 19th-Century French Metamorphic Child’s High Chair, Rocker and Rolling Chair - 38¼"

This unusual late 19th-century child’s chair is a fascinating example of metamorphic nursery furniture, designed to transform from a high chair on wheels into a lower rocking or rolling chair. The walnut-toned wooden frame combines turned spindles, curved supports and a shaped feeding tray with an ingenious system of hinged wooden members, iron linkages, a threaded adjustment mechanism and small cast-metal wheels. The mechanism remains fully operational, allowing the chair to change position as originally intended, and the wheels still roll freely. The wood has developed a rich, warm patina, with small losses and wear to the veneer, particularly around the embossed seat. The feeding tray also shows age-related movement, with the raised gallery now slightly separated from the tray surface in places. These signs of wear speak to a long life of use and add to the chair’s wonderfully authentic character.

Convertible children’s chairs were remarkably sophisticated pieces of late 19th-century engineering. From the 1870s onward, manufacturers developed chairs capable of changing between high, low, rolling and rocking configurations, reflecting the period’s fascination with ingenious furniture designed to perform several functions through carefully engineered mechanisms.
