This eye-catching Japanese ceramic bowl from the late 19th century, attributed to the Sumida Gawa pottery tradition, features five whimsical standing figures modeled in relief around the rim. Each figure is distinct in pose and color, their robes glazed in shades of green, blue, and ochre against a softly dripped brown exterior and celadon interior. The bowl bears a stamped mark beneath and shows visible restorations to several figures, with some heads likely replaced. Bowls of this type were often decorated with fishing scenes and are thought to have been used to hold small live fish or water plants, linking them to themes of abundance and contemplation.
Charming and full of character, this playful piece brings a touch of humor and poetic imagination to an interior. It makes a striking accent on a console or bookshelf, where its sculptural form and hand-modeled figures invite close inspection. The contrast of glossy glaze and tactile relief captures the expressive, almost storybook quality that defines the Sumida Gawa aesthetic, making it a delightful conversation piece that bridges folk art and decorative sculpture. It can also serve a practical decorative role, holding floating blooms, small plants, or even wrapped sweets or potpourri, bringing a touch of whimsy and texture to a tabletop display.
