This beautiful late 19th-century dinner service by Lunéville is crafted in glazed ceramic and finished in a soft ivory ground animated with hand-painted floral sprays in rose, green, and yellow. Scalloped rims edged with a fine crimson line add definition and warmth. The 21-piece ensemble includes 11 dinner plates, a lidded tureen topped with a fruit finial, serving platters of varied sizes and shapes, small side dishes, and a sauceboat. The overall effect is light, graceful, and inviting, with decoration that feels both joyful and restrained.
Founded in 1730 in eastern France, the Lunéville manufactory is the oldest French ceramic manufacture still in continuous operation. Rising to prominence in the 18th century, it enjoyed particular success throughout the 19th century, when its workshops were celebrated for finely painted tableware that balanced French elegance with accessibility. Lunéville wares were prized for their blend of artistry and practicality, designed to elevate everyday dining while remaining durable enough for regular use. Floral and garden-inspired motifs such as these were especially popular, reflecting the period’s appreciation for nature, domestic comfort, and informal refinement. Light age-related rubbing and utensil marks are present, with small rim chips, and glaze losses to the backs of some plates. Stamped underneath.
Perfect for a welcoming dining room or a garden table setting, this service brings gentle color and a collected, lived-in elegance. Dress a long table with linen and crystal for convivial dinners, display stacks of plates and platters in a glazed cabinet, or create a charming plate wall to showcase the floral decoration. Smaller dishes may be repurposed as bedside catchalls, while the tureen makes a beautiful seasonal centerpiece filled with flowers. The ensemble offers an easy balance of beauty and function, lending warmth and charm to both traditional and contemporary interiors while remaining well suited to modern entertaining.
