Late 19th Century Painted Papier Mache Milliner’s Head w/ Patina- 15¼"

This late nineteenth century milliner’s head is a beautifully preserved example of a traditional marotte, hand formed in papier mache and finished with softly aged polychrome paint. The serene female face is framed by dark painted hair and subtle features, while the torso is enlivened with delicate floral motifs and scrolling lines.  Particularly charming is the raised headband, modeled in relief and adding a gentle sense of depth and texture. As is typical of such working forms, the back is left open, a practical feature that allowed the papier mâché to be released from its mold and fully dried while keeping the form lightweight for workshop use. Time has softened the surface, leaving a warm, nuanced patina with traces of its original color that speak to decades of careful use. 

In French, these milliner's heads are called "marottes" and emerged in the second half of the eighteenth century and were essential tools in millinery workshops, where they supported caps and headdresses so they would remain pressed, shaped, and ready to wear. 

Displayed today, this sculptural piece brings quiet poetry and authenticity to an interior. It sits beautifully on a console, dressing table, or bookshelf, where its muted palette of cream, brown, and softened color adds warmth without overwhelming a space. It can be used as a stand for a favorite hat, scarf, or necklace, or simply appreciated as an object of folk art with a strong sense of history. Especially striking when grouped with other antique milliner’s heads, it creates a collected, atelier inspired atmosphere and lends a room character, intimacy, and a subtle nod to the craftsmanship of the past.
