Painted Sacristy Cabinet from Southern France - 72" x 54¼"

A handsome 19th-century painted cabinet from the south of France, originally made for a church sacristy to store vestments and sacred textiles. Its restrained design, pleasing proportions, and generous storage make it as practical as it is elegant, allowing it to integrate effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary interiors. Behind the paneled doors, the interior has been freshly painted in a soft blue, creating a crisp contrast with the timeworn exterior, while new shelving enhances its everyday functionality. The lower apron conceals a wide, shallow drawer, originally designed to store folded chasubles.

Crafted from solid timber, likely oak, the cabinet displays a richly layered painted finish with beautifully worn edges revealing lighter tones beneath, accentuating the mouldings and carved details. The removable cornice is secured by its original metal hooks, which are still present. Areas of historic wear and damage to the wood have been carefully stabilised, preserving the cabinet's authenticity while ensuring its longevity. The original locks remain in place, including an interesting metal locking mechanism on the left door. As is often the case with antique cabinetry of this age, the doors require a firm push to align and close securely.
