Late 20th-Century Ceramic Doe-Form Lidded Dish for the Michel Caugant Delicatessen House - 10¼"

This lovely hand-painted earthenware lidded dish is modeled as a resting doe, her glossy coat shaded in warm chestnut and soft cream, with grassy green accents grounding the form at the base. Finely modeled fur and a gently raised head give the figure a calm, natural presence, while the alert eyes lend a quiet sense of watchfulness. Made circa 1960s-1980s for the Michel Caugant Delicatessen firm in the late 20th century, the piece belongs to the celebrated series of animal-shaped serving dishes commissioned to present the house’s pâtés and charcuterie specialties.

Under the base, a printed handwritten-style French note signed by Michel Caugant reads: “Cette pièce en faïence véritable a été entièrement réalisée à la main. Je vous la propose en exclusivité.” (“This piece, in genuine faience, was made entirely by hand. I offer it to you exclusively.”) This inscription reflects the house’s tradition of commissioning artisanal ceramics specifically for their celebrated pâté terrines, produced by partner workshops and offered exclusively under the Caugant name.
