Lavish 19th-Century French Gilt-Bronze and Crystal Twelve-Light Chandelier - 31½" x 19¾"

This impressive late 19th-century French twelve-light chandelier combines richly worked gilt bronze with an exceptional profusion of cut crystal. The broad composition features twelve scrolling arms forming a dense crown around the central body. Crystal bead swags fall vertically through the composition and drape between the arms, while faceted drops in varied forms, including long spear- and icicle-shaped pendants, create a rich cascade throughout. Above, a distinctive parasol-shaped canopy spreads outward in a shallow dome, adding another layer to the chandelier’s richly constructed silhouette.

The chandelier has been carefully restored and rewired in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence by a passionate specialist in historic lighting working closely with Mathieu Lustrerie, the renowned Provençal atelier specializing in the restoration and creation of fine historic lighting. The restoration has focused on preserving the richness and character of the original piece while bringing the electrification up to a high modern standard. The numerous crystal elements have been carefully arranged, with some replaced where necessary, allowing the chandelier to recover the sparkle and depth of its elaborate design.

With its twelve lights, bright gilding and profusion of crystal, the chandelier has a rich, jewel-like presence and considerable scale. The parasol canopy adds a theatrical flourish, balancing the cascade of pendants below and giving the composition a grander silhouette. Opulent without feeling heavy, it would be particularly well suited to a large dining room, entrance hall or high-ceilinged sitting room, bringing a sense of grandeur and old-world glamour.
