An impressive late 19th-century glazed earthenware bulldog by the Bavent Manufacture, modeled at life size with striking naturalism. The glossy white body is subtly shaded in charcoal gray, enhancing the muscular form and giving depth to the modeling. The head is especially expressive, with deeply articulated folds of skin around the muzzle, brow, and neck, and a characteristically grumpy, resolute expression typical of the breed. Original sulfur eyes are set deep within the sockets, lending the figure an expressive and lifelike presence. The sculpting captures the broad chest, sturdy stance, and powerful paws with convincing realism, while a firing defect visible along one side of the body, likely incurred during production, further distinguishes the piece and adds to its unique character. The piece shows gentle timeworn wear consistent with age and use, including fine glaze crazing and crackle, minor rubbing to the paw tips, and a small chip to the lower lip.
The Bavent Manufacture, based in Normandy, became renowned in the 19th and early 20th centuries for architectural roof finials and lifelike animal figures. Artisans combined molded bodies with hand finishing and layered glazes, often adding glass eyes to heighten animation and depth. These works remain sought after for their distinctive presence, sturdy earthenware construction, and strong regional identity, and pieces of this scale with original glass eyes are particularly prized by collectors and decorators today.
This steadfast companion brings warmth and a hint of whimsy to an entry, library, or fireside, where the eyes gently catch the light. Let it stand guard beside a console, anchor a bay window, or animate a sunroom or orangery, protected from frost. It pairs beautifully with leather and dark woods for a country house mood, or with pale plaster and clean lines for a striking contemporary counterpoint, offering a welcoming focal point with personality and quiet charm.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
