Lively 1964 Palette-Knife Oil on Panel of Two Roosters - 33" x 25¼"

This lively 1964 oil on panel, signed Nabor at the lower left, depicts two roosters in a bold, highly expressive composition. The painting is built up with vigorous palette-knife work, creating a richly textured surface, while the birds’ plumage unfolds in sweeping curves of coral red, orange, cream, deep blue and black against a cooler turquoise ground. The artist plays particularly well with movement: the long tail feathers curl and spiral through the lower half of the painting, while the upright heads and vivid red combs bring a strong vertical counterpoint. The reverse bears the title and date 1964, together with a Paris address, adding a useful element of provenance. It is presented in a simple giltwood frame with light age-related wear. The painted surface shows a few tiny scattered losses near the edges.

The painting has a particularly lively decorative presence, driven by its swirling sense of movement and a rich palette of warm oranges set against cooler turquoise and blue tones.  The rooster subject brings both a farmyard charm and a distinctly French note, long associated with the national emblem. It would bring color, character and energy to a kitchen, hung above a wooden buffet or anchoring a dining nook.
