A striking large Louis XVI secrétaire à guillotine in richly patinated mahogany, distinguished by its elegant architectural lines and gorgeous sparkling mercury mirror. This type of tall secretary is composed of three distinct sections: a lower chest opening with drawers, a central writing section with a fall front revealing the writing surface and fitted interior, and an upper cabinet section opening with one or two doors. Here, the façade displays refined neoclassical lines with fluted uprights and delicate brass inlay, characteristic of the restrained elegance of the Louis XVI period. Particularly remarkable is the large mercury mirror, whose softly shimmering surface retains all the atmospheric depth and charm of antique mercury glass while remaining unusually clear and fully functional in reflection. The warm tones of the mahogany are beautifully enhanced by the subtle sparkle of the mirror, giving the piece remarkable presence and luminosity. The ingenious central section is designed with two faux drawers that in fact open as fall-front compartments, revealing shelves, small drawers, and a writing surface, an amusing and sophisticated detail typical of fine period cabinetry. Another charming touch is the false escutcheon placed on the mirrored door purely to preserve visual symmetry. Elegant and practical, this impressive piece anchors a room with quiet authority while offering generous storage and a beautifully integrated workspace. In a library or study, the fall-front writing section creates an elegant desk area, while the mirrored upper section brings light and depth to the room.
