This early 20th-century French oak games table in the Louis XVI Revival style features a distinctive octagonal top covered in deep red faux leather, framed by a carved egg-and-dart border typical of Neoclassical decoration. Four discreet pull-out trays are cleverly concealed beneath the short angled sides of the tabletop, each with a raised edge to hold playing pieces or glasses. The table stands on four slender, tapered and fluted legs, with turned details and carved corner blocks characteristic of the Louis XVI style. The warm oak has a mellow patina, while the red faux-leather playing surface shows scratches, marks and signs of previous use, as does the surrounding wood. The underside also shows evidence of later reinforcement.
We particularly like the table's distinctive octagonal shape and the combination of classic Louis XVI Revival details with the deep red playing surface, which adds a lovely contrast to the warm oak. Its slender legs give it an elegant, light appearance, while the four pull-out trays make it practical for card games or board games with friends and family. It would be a charming addition to a library, study or sitting room, where it could also serve as an occasional table when not in use for games.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
