Petite French Louis XVI style two-seat canapé in carved and gilt beech, likely late 19th to early 20th century. The upright back is crowned by a sculptural floral bouquet, the open arms terminate in tight scrolls, and the rails carry a delicate pearl-bead moulding. Tapered, fluted legs rise to square die joins with rosette paterae. Upholstered in a soft blue and ivory floral stripe tapestry trimmed with nailheads, the settee presents in good, timeworn condition with scattered rubs and small losses to the gilding, minor gesso chips at the arms, and light wear marks to the fabric.
An elegant choice for a living room, it offers graceful two-person seating beneath a window or between a pair of consoles. At the end of a bed, the upright back keeps the silhouette crisp while the carved frame adds texture. For a more contemporary look, retain the gilded frame and refresh the upholstery in linen, mohair, or a quiet velvet, allowing the fluted legs and rosette details to anchor both traditional and modern schemes.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
