A charming antique enamelled tumbler in the manner of Mary Gregory, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Mouth-blown, the clear glass shows the subtle irregularities typical of hand production, with gentle waviness and tiny air bubbles that attest to its artisanal origin. The decoration features a delicate white enamel scene of a young child in a bucolic landscape, surrounded by stylised foliage and grasses.
This type of figural decoration, often depicting children at play in pastoral settings, is characteristic of pieces inspired by the work of Mary Gregory. Mary Gregory (1856–1908) was an American glass decorator became known for her finely enamelled scenes of children, typically rendered in opaque white enamel on coloured or clear glass. Although her original work was produced in the late 19th century, the popularity of her style led to widespread imitation in Bohemia and elsewhere in Europe around 1900, where similar scenes were applied to mouth-blown glassware.
This piece is a lovely example of that tradition, both decorative and evocative, with a timeless, nostalgic appeal. It would make a charming night glass on a guestroom nightstand or could be repurposed as a delicate bud vase for a small spring bouquet.
