A decorative mid-20th-century lidded apothecary jar produced by the Léon Warin manufacture in Malicorne, signed under the base with the workshop’s mark. Generous in scale and finely proportioned, the jar is entirely hand-painted in a classic Delft-inspired palette of cobalt blue enriched with warm ochre accents on a luminous ivory ground. The subtly ribbed baluster body is organized into vertical panels animated with scrolling foliage, stylized blossoms, and geometric borders, all rendered with a lively and assured brush. The overall form recalls the Chinese ginger jar, while the domed lid is crowned with a sculptural parrot finial, a whimsical and exotic motif drawn from European faience traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries, where such imagery was used to evoke distant worlds and decorative fantasy. The front bears the inscription **EX LUPULI**, referring to an extract of hops traditionally used in historic pharmacy for its calming and medicinal properties, affirming the jar’s dialogue with European apothecary tradition.
Léon Warin was a French glass engineer active at the turn of the 20th century, whose work focused on the design and manufacture of apothecary and pharmaceutical vessels. Over the course of the 20th century, the manufacture he founded evolved and became established in Malicorne, where it produced high-quality ceramic interpretations of historic apothecary jars, valued for their craftsmanship, decorative richness, and continuity with antique pharmacy wares. The mark, formed from the interlaced initials L and W, is cleverly arranged to resemble an apothecary scale, underscoring the workshop’s enduring connection to pharmaceutical tradition.
Whether presented as a focal point or grouped within a curated collection, this jar brings a sense of refinement, history, and quiet ceremony to an interior.
