A stately mid 20th century cast iron pedestal letterbox, likely French, with a square box under a bell shaped roof patterned with fish scale tiles and crowned by a turned finial. The front features a hinged mail slot inscribed with the word Letters above a crisp bas relief of a mounted courier between small pilasters, while the collection door sits at the back and now closes with a newly fitted working lock and key. The baluster stem rises from a square plinth edged with leaf tips and the base is pierced at the corners for fixing to the ground. Layers of dark paint with verdigris highlights and areas of rust create a handsome patina, giving the piece rich depth and nostalgic charm. Though nicely weathered from age, it remains sound and fully functional.
Placed at the end of a drive, on a garden path, or beside a townhouse stoop, this letterbox brings both utility and presence with a whimsical, almost storybook charm. Its bell-shaped roof and courier relief lend a touch of ceremony to everyday correspondence, while the time-softened surface harmonizes beautifully with brick, stone, and wrought iron. It pairs effortlessly with limestone steps, clipped boxwood, or garden gates, adding playful character and nostalgic grace to both outdoor and covered settings such as porches or conservatories.
