A mid 20th century French hand painted faience bombonniere produced for the French confectionery brand Marquise de Sévigné. The rounded vessel stands on three small feet and is fitted with a domed lid topped by a ball finial, with a handle at the back that completes its compact and practical form. Its bright decoration combines lemon yellow, deep cobalt blue, and leafy green tones, with a band of grape clusters encircling the body. A circular vignette depicts a convivial tavern scene with figures gathered around a table, adding a lively narrative touch. The underside of the lid is inscribed “Chocolat de Royat A. Rouzaud” and retains a period label portraying the Marquise de Sévigné. The glaze shows gentle age with a warm patina. Condition is good overall with an old repair to the inside of the lid lid and a small chip on its top, as well as a minor loss to one foot.
The jar relates to the Marquise de Sévigné chocolate company founded in 1898 in Royat in central France by Auguste and Clémentine Rouzaud. The brand took its name from the Marquise de Sévigné, the celebrated 17th century French letter writer, who mentioned and praised chocolate in the letters she wrote to her daughter. At the time chocolate had only recently been introduced to France and was still considered a refined luxury enjoyed mainly by aristocratic circles. By invoking this figure, the Rouzaud family associated their chocolate with the elegance and cultural prestige of early French chocolate traditions. Decorative containers such as this jar helped position the chocolate as a refined luxury product, using lively imagery and finely crafted vessels to elevate the brand and reflect the elegance associated with fine confectionery.
With its vivid colors and charming narrative decoration, the piece makes a cheerful decorative accent for a kitchen shelf or cabinet, equally at home on a dresser or open shelving where it brings brightness and character to the space while offering a graceful container for sugar, cacao, or wrapped sweets. At the same time, it serves as a small witness to the history of French confectionery
