Mid-20th Century French Majolica Pitcher w/ Swan Decoration - 7"

This French barbotine (French majolica) pitcher was made in Le Poët-Laval in the mid-20th century and is decorated on both sides with a charming pair of swans molded in relief. Their creamy white bodies stand out against a soft blue ground, framed by green foliage and warm brown accents, while the sunny yellow rim, handle and foot give the piece a lively, cheerful presence. Light wear is visible around the rim, with some patina settled into the recessed decoration, all consistent with age and use.

Le Poët-Laval, in the Drôme region of southeastern France, developed a distinctive tradition of colorful glazed earthenware, combining practical forms with playful relief decoration and bringing a more modern spirit to regional pottery. Production continued there for well over a century, a testament to its enduring appeal.

This pitcher is a particularly cheerful example, with its bright palette and whimsical swan motif. It can still be used occasionally as a pitcher or vase, or simply displayed to bring a fresh note of color to open kitchen shelving, a dresser or a collection of French majolica and regional ceramics.
