Mid-20th-Century French Weather Vane w/ Conical Roof Fitting - 43¼"

This characterful French weather vane, probably dating from the mid-20th century, is made from painted and metal sheet, with a broad directional arrow above the four French compass points: N for nord (north), S for sud (south), E for est (east) and O for ouest (west). The pale blue-gray paint has weathered beautifully, with rubbing, oxidation and rust developed through long exposure outdoors. The mechanism rises from a substantial conical roof fitting, probably made to cap the summit of a small turret, pigeonnier or other pointed roof.

With its generous proportions, faded paint and wonderfully weathered surface, the piece has a strong sculptural quality. It could be reinstated on a suitable garden building or pavilion, but would be equally appealing placed at ground level among planting and greenery, or brought indoors in a garden room, conservatory or large entrance hall. Its beautifully aged patina brings with it the atmosphere of an old French country property.
