This mid twentieth century oil on panel depicts a sunlit landscape near Eyguieres in Provence, as indicated by the inscription on the reverse reading “Ruines près d’Eyguieres.” The Alpilles massif rises in the distance beyond a gently unfolding foreground of rustic buildings and vegetation. The composition is rendered with confident, textured brushwork that captures the warmth and clarity of southern light across hills, trees, and open sky. In the sky, subtly gilded clouds catch the light, lending a delicate atmospheric shimmer. Earthy greens, soft ochres, and muted blues create a harmonious palette, reinforcing the landscape’s sense of calm and natural rhythm. Surface wear is visible throughout, including minor abrasions, light scratches, and areas of thinning paint, with more pronounced rubbing and wear along the edges.
Viewed up close, the vigorous handling of paint and layered strokes verge on abstraction, with forms dissolving into expressive marks and colour. From a distance, however, the landscape coheres and reveals its full composition. The reverse further records a dedication to a friend, adding a personal note to the work’s history.
Calm and atmospheric, this landscape brings a sense of openness and natural light into an interior. Its modest scale allows it to sit comfortably above a console, within a study, or layered into a gallery wall where its textured surface can be appreciated up close. It pairs beautifully with natural materials such as linen, wood, and stone, reinforcing a relaxed Mediterranean mood.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
