This decorative plaster pedestal, likely dating from the mid-20th century, features a beautiful twisted column inspired by classical architectural ornament, with deep spiral fluting running the length of its tall shaft. The column rises from a shaped octagonal base and is topped with a circular capital decorated with a row of gadroon motifs. Finished in soft, chalky white, the surface shows marks, small chips and areas of wear, particularly around the edges of the top and base. Although it has a solid, reassuring presence and stands firmly, the pedestal is hollow, making it easier to move.
The combination of its bold spiral design and simple white finish gives this pedestal a lovely architectural presence, with a slightly romantic, classical feel. It would be perfect for displaying an antique bust in a library or a pot of trailing ivy in a garden room, with the foliage spilling gently over the edges. It could also find a place in an entryway, supporting a decorative vase, sculpture or lamp.
