Mid-20th-Century Provençal Landscape w/ Windmill, Oil on Board - 19¾" x 27½"

This mid-20th-century oil on board depicts a weathered windmill set within a sunlit Provençal landscape, with tall cypresses, low hills and scrubby vegetation beneath a pale blue sky. The horizontal format gives the scene a broad, open feeling, while the vertical forms of the mill and cypresses create a pleasing counterpoint. Painted with loose, expressive brushwork and areas of visible impasto, the palette combines warm ochres, dusty greens, soft blues and chalky creams. Deep shadows around the doorway and trees convey the intensity of the southern sun. The work is signed at the lower right and presented in a cream-painted period wood frame with a distressed, textured finish. Light surface grime, a few tiny losses to the painting and gentle opening at the frame joins all contribute to its softly timeworn character and complement the rustic Provençal subject.
