This small wall-mounted flour box in solid walnut dates from the mid-20th century and retains a warm chestnut patina with a gently burnished surface. The tall shaped front panel rises to a carved scallop shell crest and is finely hand-carved with a tied ribbon suspending a leafy sprig and a pair of crossed fish, an explicit reference to its original use for flouring fish before frying. Below, a small flowered apron rests on delicately curled feet, allowing the piece to stand securely on a shelf or counter. The back is pierced for wall hanging, offering versatile display options.
The box opens with a vertical sliding front panel, allowing contents to be placed inside and gently shaken, a practical design intended to coat fish evenly in flour while conserving the excess. Traditionally used in Provençal kitchens, the fariniero reflects the region’s spirit of economy and practical ingenuity combined with a strong decorative sensibility.
Today, this charming cabinet may be hung in a kitchen or pantry to store spices, tea, or twine, or placed on a counter among cutting boards and copper for a collected look. It also repurposes beautifully as a small mail or key holder in an entryway. The carved fish and shell introduce a subtle coastal note, lending warmth, history, and quiet character to both rustic and refined interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
