This charming mid-20th-century salad bowl from Savoie is a lovely example of traditional handmade French country pottery. Its generous, gently flared shape is finished in a warm terracotta-red glaze on the outside, contrasting with the creamy ivory interior. Around the inner rim runs a delightful hand-painted border of rust-red scallops and small curling green motifs, while a fine circular line marks the center of the bowl. The glaze has developed a mellow patina, particularly inside, where subtle discoloration, tiny speckles and traces of use give the surface a soft, timeworn appearance. The bowl remains in good vintage condition, with light wear consistent with its age.
The combination of earthy colors, simple shape and cheerful decoration gives this bowl a lovely French country feel. It would look beautiful filled with apples, pears or lemons on a kitchen sideboard or farmhouse table, where the colorful fruit would complement the warm glaze. It would also sit naturally among old wooden boards, linen textiles and other pieces of traditional French pottery. For decorative use rather than direct food service.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
