An expressive mid-20th-century French oil on canvas still life by Émile Lombard, this work depicts a still life in the artist's Provençal studio, with a ram’s skull with curling horns, a glass lantern, a dark glazed jug, copper pan, and a bouquet of wildflowers set before cool blue and green backdrop. Painted with vivid chromatic contrasts in cobalt, teal, ochre, and umber, the composition is built in thick impasto that creates palpable surface relief and crisp contours. The presence of the skull nods to the vanitas tradition, while the humble vessels and copperware reflect the artist’s daily surroundings.
Lombard (1883–1973), known for his bold color and dense, animated brushwork, captures immediacy and light with great vitality here. Notably, the painting is signed twice, once in yellow at the lower left and again in black at the lower right. It is presented in a molded giltwood frame with a cream inner border.
This piece brings depth and character to an entry, library, or dining nook, where its bold palette anchors a wall with confident presence. It pairs beautifully with plaster, limestone, or raw oak, and echoes well alongside patinated copper, rustic ceramics, and a simple field bouquet.
