This mid-twentieth-century Vallauris majolica basket is hand-modeled with a twisted rope handle rising above an oval woven body. The rim is adorned with applied branches of grapes, berries, and fruit framed by veined leaves, all finished in a deep green glaze with mottled touches of crimson, rose, and cream. The base is stamped Heny, identifying it as a quality production from the celebrated Riviera pottery town of Vallauris.
The piece reflects Vallauris’s mid-century revival of traditional faïence, when ateliers introduced exuberant barbotine modeling and vivid glazes into playful, decorative forms. The woven clay body, applied fruit, and rich glaze evoke abundance at table while showcasing regional craftsmanship.
This large bowl can be used for serving or display. It will add a touch of retro Provence style to your home décor, whether placed on a dining table filled with seasonal fruit, on a kitchen island, or left empty on a console to highlight its sculptural relief and vibrant color.
