Mid 20th Monumental Biot Bubble Glass Hurricane Candle Holder w/ Majolica Fruit Base - 29½"

A monumental mid-20th-century hurricane candle holder comprising a tall, waisted bubble-glass chimney from Biot set into a hand-modelled majolica base richly decorated with fruit and foliage, originally finished with vibrant glazes and later softened by a green wash that lends a beautifully aged, verdigris-like appearance. The hand-blown Biot glass chimney is characteristically seeded with tiny air bubbles and gently wavy.

Unlike most hurricane candle holders, the glass chimney is designed with an integrated lower section that fits securely inside the ceramic base rather than simply resting on top. As a result, the candle must be inserted through the top opening before the chimney is placed in position. A wax pillar or LED candle is recommended. This striking piece reflects the enduring appeal of Provence's decorative arts.

Biot glass, produced near Antibes from the 1950s onwards, became celebrated for its distinctive bubble-filled hand-blown glass, while the sculptural fruit base draws inspiration from the richly modelled majolica traditions of southern Europe. The later green wash gives the piece a softer, country-house character.
