This sculptural vase, created in the 1950s by the celebrated Accolay potters (signed on the underside), is a fine example of postwar French ceramic innovation. Its simple silhouette is enhanced by a striking green to dark brown glaze that evokes the shifting tones of forest and earth. With its fluid curves and tactile surface, the vase offers a poetic presence—whether standing alone as an art object or cradling a few thoughtfully chosen blooms. Compact yet expressive, it can serve as a centerpiece on a dining table or bring an organic accent to a sideboard or open shelf.
Accolay pottery emerged from a remarkable artistic collective formed in 1944 in the village of Accolay, Burgundy, by four former students of the great ceramist Alexandre Kostanda. What began with a single kiln producing ceramic buttons and jewelry—including a notable 1945 commission from Christian Dior—soon blossomed into a dynamic and prolific studio. From the late 1940s through the early 1980s, Accolay potters created an eclectic body of work combining wit, craftsmanship, and modernist flair. Their production ranged from ceramics to glass and even woven objects, always marked by a spirit of experimentation and bohemian playfulness.
Today, Accolay pieces are celebrated for their distinctive forms, vibrant glazes, and authentic place in the story of 20th-century design. This vase, with its elegant patina and organic lines, embodies that heritage—offering not only a beautiful object but a piece of artistic history to enrich contemporary interiors.
