This petite garden statue of a doe from the 1960s is cast in concrete with a sweetly attentive posture: head turned, ears tall, and legs gathered against stylized tufts of grass rising from an oval base. Hand-painted in soft fawn ochre with gentle umber shading and a yellow-green ground, the surface now shows a mellow, naturally weathered patina. Condition is authentically timeworn, with scattered paint losses, light abrasions, small edge chips, and fine age hairlines, all stable and adding to its vintage charm.
Postwar French gardens often featured these naïvely modeled béton animals, sold by pépiniéristes and brought to life with hand-applied paint. Original finishes are now rare, giving this example its authentic mid-century charm.
Ideal for a gravel terrace, potager path, or shaded woodland planting, this doe lends gentle presence among boxwood and terracotta pots. Indoors, it can anchor a garden room or conservatory, set on a low plinth beside wirework seating or a rustic console. Its soft palette and timeworn surface pair easily with French country, cottage, or wabi-sabi interiors, adding a gentle whisper of whimsy and warmth.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
