This mid-century French hand-carved wooden duck decoy, worked from lightweight softwood, has a rounded body, gently turned head and incised feathering that follows the form of the bird. The small painted pupils give it a watchful expression, while the dark brown to near-black finish has rubbed back in places to reveal warm ochre tones beneath. The carved tool marks catch this wear particularly well, almost suggesting the natural variation of feathers.  Time and use have left scattered light wear and a visible old neck repair adding to its rustic charm. and the small turned base has a gently crackled surface.
Originally made as a working waterfowl decoy, it now reads beautifully as a piece of French folk art. The hand-carved texture, softened paint and aged patina give it real character, with a warm rustic quality that is central to its appeal. It would sit easily on a console, mantel, desk or library shelf, either alone or among old books and natural-history pieces to create a naturalist or sporting vignette. On its own, it also works well as a grounded, organic sculptural accent.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
