This beatiful mid-century still life, an oil on panel signed  Tilmand  (or Tilmans) and dated 1945 on the reverse, is imbued with a gentle, romantic charm. At its heart rests a cream faïence cup with a soft blue rim, tenderly cradling a loose bouquet of white, yellow, pink, and blue blossoms. Beside it, a wicker basket brims with pale grapes, accompanied by two apples, all set upon a blue-draped tabletop. The warm umber ground enhances the sense of intimacy, drawing the eye to the freshness and lightness of the arrangement. The artist’s brushwork is lively yet delicate, with painterly impasto that lends texture to the petals and fruit, while a harmonious palette of ochres, blues, and greens infuses the composition with quiet elegance. Presented in a simple off-white wooden frame with a molded profile, the painting’s softness is complemented by the frame’s weathered, rustic surface, where scattered wear only deepens its poetic character.
This still life follows the European tradition, combining the quiet domesticity of 17th-century Netherlandish models with the rich color and freer brushwork favored by French and Belgian painters of the 1930s and 1940s. The faience vessel and wicker basket evoke provincial markets and kitchen tables, while the warm background and modest scale create a sense of intimacy. Quietly celebrating everyday abundance, this piece is ideal for a kitchen or dining room, bringing a gentle harvest mood and pleasing color.
