Impressive in scale, this house-form aviary is crafted in painted metal wire with a multi-gabled roof and a rhythm of arched portals, its mint-green frame enlivened by bright color accents. Constructed with welded steel rod and fine mesh, it features small square service windows trimmed in ochre with vivid blue turn latches, and a sheet-metal floor painted in a sky-blue and sunflower-yellow checkerboard recalling domestic tile. Likely French and dating to the 1960s, it stands in rustic, timeworn condition with weathered paint, oxidation, a broken main door currently secured with wire, several non-functioning window latches, and surface losses to the painted floor.
Evoking the evolution of 19th-century conservatory aviaries, this whimsical piece reflects the cheerful palettes and playful spirit of mid-century French garden design, its house silhouette, dormer-like windows, and tiled floor transforming a functional birdcage into a charming miniature pavilion.
As a decorative statement, this large aviary makes a striking sculptural focal point for a garden room, sunroom, or covered porch. Its impressive scale and cheerful palette of mint green and checkerboard hues bring instant charm and playfulness to any space. While it would require repairs to safely house birds again, as it stands it remains a decorative showpiece, perfect styled with potted ferns, trailing ivy, or seasonal displays. Its color and form add height, texture, and a touch of whimsy, pairing beautifully with raw wood, linen, and zinc in both rustic and contemporary interiors.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
