A monumental carved and polychromed wood figure of Saint Veronica, circa 1600, of exceptional scale and presence. Formerly in a private collection in Monaco. Seated in a dignified pose, she wears a rose-coloured gown beneath a deep blue mantle enriched with traces of gilding and star motifs. Her delicately carved face, flowing hair, and deeply undercut drapery demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, while the forward-reaching arms indicate she once held the Sudarium, Saint Veronica's traditional attribute in Christian iconography. The base is adorned with carved putti.

Timeworn condition with wear to the polychromy, age cracks, and losses, particularly to the hands. A substantial loss to the rear section reveals the hollowed construction and may indicate the figure originally formed part of a larger sculptural ensemble. The condition is consistent with centuries of devotional use and display.

Combining the grace of the Renaissance with the growing naturalism of the Baroque, this impressive sculpture was created to inspire devotion and contemplation. Its monumental scale, fully carved back, and ambitious execution suggest an important ecclesiastical commission, likely intended for a major church, abbey, or aristocratic chapel.
