This monumental "terres mêlées" ceramic vase by Pichon of Uzès takes the form of an antique-inspired amphora, with a broad ovoid body, tall tapering neck, and everted rim supported by four vertical strap handles with leafy terminals. The marbled body displays swirling veins of moss green, ochre, cream, and charcoal beneath a matte glaze that softens the surface. Decorative banding emphasizes the segmented profile, lending an architectural presence. Bearing the Pichon factory mark incised under the base, the piece likely dates to the late 19th century. Its surface shows light wear to the matte finish, gentle rubbing at the rim and base, and areas of fine craquelure, all contributing to its aged charm.
Founded in 1802 in Uzès, the Pichon workshop became celebrated for refined earthenware that bridged utilitarian pottery and decorative art. This vase exemplifies the 19th-century French fascination with the classical past, reinterpreting Greco-Roman amphora silhouettes as sculptural décor. The "terres mêlées" technique, akin to agateware, required great technical mastery, as differently colored clays were carefully mingled to create natural marbling with no two results alike. The matte finish was deliberately chosen to allow the stratified clays to be read clearly without the glare of a lustrous glaze. Vessels of this monumental scale were often produced as showpieces for salons and grand halls, aligning with the period’s taste for archaeological revival forms and richly patterned surfaces.
As a statement object, the vase performs beautifully on a console, pier table, or pedestal, where its height and marbled palette can anchor an entryway or living room. It may be left unfilled as a sculptural focal point, or arranged with tall branches for seasonal display. Its organic veining harmonizes with marble, limestone, or bleached oak, bringing a nuanced classical note to traditional, Mediterranean, or eclectic interiors.
